Writer – Blogger

My first writing job was on the obit desk at the Greensboro News & Record in Greensboro, N.C.

Where else could I possibly go but up?

Since that inauspicious debut, I’ve been a daily newspaper reporter (for The Post and Courier in Charleston, S.C.), trade newspaper reporter (Computerworld), and magazine editor (Macworld). I’ve co-authored the non-fiction book Getting Organized in the Google Era, published by Random House’s Broadway Books (hardcover 2010, paperback 2011).

Professional Blogger

For nearly eight years, I wrote the Mobile Computing blog for PCWorld.com, which also appeared on About.com, CNN.com, Washingtonpost.com, and many other sites. While I was its author, the blog won 2 Maggie awards and 1 American Society of Business Publication Editors award. Randy Ross, my editor at the time, wrote this about me on LinkedIn: “In my 15 years as an editor at PC World, Jim Martin was one of the most professional, easy-going writers I worked with. His writing is excellent — clear, concise, and at times humorous.” You can browse an archive of my PCWorld.com articles here.

From 2012 to 2014, I wrote the Martin on Mobile Apps blog for CIO.com, which won the ASBPE Gold National Award in the category of Blog – Analysis/Commentary. I am also the (occasional) author of the blog  A Southerner in San Francisco, which was showcased in October 2011 on Google’s Blogs of Note.

In April 2015, I launched a new blog, The Apple Watch Watch.

A Freelancer for The New York Times, Many Others

In my many years as a freelance travel, tech, and entertainment writer, my byline has appeared in the following publications:

* The New York Times — I wrote several articles for the Times’ Travel section, including “Golden Gate, Silver Screen,” a tour of San Francisco movie locations.

* Entertainment Weekly — My passion for movies fueled any number of stories, such as this look back at the thriller Carrie. You can see my other EW articles here.

* Travel + Leisure — I contributed many articles to T&L over the years, including this guide to Fourth Street in Berkeley, Calif.

Other publications for which I’ve written include:

* Sunset magazine

* Conde Nast Traveler

* Los Angeles Times

* San Francisco Chronicle

* San Jose Mercury News

* Family PC

* Computer Life

* Expedia Travels

In 2000, my writing career came full circle, in a way, when I published a Father’s Day tribute to my late father, photographer C.W. Martin. The essay appeared in the Greensboro News & Record–the same paper on which I got my start writing obits. You can download the article Steak_on_Saturday_Night in PDF format.
